Suffocation es una banda estadounidense de death metal. Suffocation adoptaron las estructuras del progressive metal y los ritmos del grindcore al death metal, lo que les hace pioneros en los estilos technical death metal y en el brutal death metal. Suffocation esta a la par con bandas como Immolation e Incantation debido a que pertenecen al conocido "death metal neoyorkino" (New York Death metal o NYDM para abreviar). También son conocidos por tener dos músicos afroamericanos (baterista Mike Smith y el guitarrista Terrance Hobbs) lo cual es muy raro de ver en la escena del metal extremo.
