Mi colección de Jazz (1ª parte - 115 discos)

    
Pues empezamos con este post donde iré subiendo una genial colección de discos de Jazz, desde clásicos como Gillespie, Miles o Charlie Parker o algunos más desconocidos como Art Pepper, Clifford Jordan o Eric Dolphy.

Tocaremos todos los palos del Jazz o eso intentaremos, espero que la disfrutéis escuchándolos tanto como yo.

Suite Trane (In Memoriam John Coltrane)(1969)

El gran saxofonista John Coltrane sirvió de inspiración a diversos músicos, entre ellos al compositor y pianista argentino Alberto Favero. Que trás la muerte del saxofonista se dedicó en cuerpo y alma a esta suite en 5 movimientos para orquesta de jazz y solistas. Aquí os dejo esta gran obra trás petición, faltan 3 temas, Hombre Amaestrado (Domesticated Man) (Baby López Fürst), It might as well be spring (Rodgers- Hammerstein) y Blues de la calle 51 (51st Street Blues) (Alberto Favero) 4:35 que pertenecen a los bonus track, en cuanto los tenga los añadiré, pero sigue siendo una obra imprescindible.

CORNELIUS BUMPUS


A clear view (1981)

Cornelius Bumpus empezó a tocar el saxo alto a los 10 años en Santa Cruz, California. Su amor a la música creció y a los 12 años ya había tocado en su primera banda.

En 1966 pasó seis meses tocando con Bobby Freeman, posteriormente colaboró con The Doobie Brothers. A su vuelta a Nueva York en 1986 grabó con numerosos artistas de la talla de Etta James, Hugh Masakela o Nite Sprite. Murió en 2004 de un ataque al corazón en un vuelo de New York a Los Angeles, a donde acudía a un festival.

DEXTER GORDON

Nacido en Los Ángeles y considerado uno de los mejores saxofonistas tenores del bebop y el hardbop. Su primera colaboración importante fue con la orquesta de Lionel Hampton (1940-1943) aunque la presencia de Illinois Jacquet le impidió lucirse en los solos. Después de actuar durante seis meses con la orquesta de Louis Armstrong se incorporó a la orquesta de Billy Eckstine. De vuelta en Los Ángeles, participó en un sexteto al lado de Charlie Parker y Miles Davis, para después crear su primer cuarteto. Durante esos años grabó con Dizzy Gillespie, Fats Navarro, Charlie Parker, J.J. Johnson y Tadd Dameron, antes de asociarse con Wardell Gray, con quien protagonizó interesantes duelos entre 1947 y 1952 y de los que nació el disco "The Chase" (1947) .

Desde 1952, sus problemas con las drogas le llevaron a una carrera irregular durante el resto de la década (grabando dos discos en 1955). Hacia 1960, se recuperó e inició una serie de grabaciones para Blue Note. En 1962, en pleno éxito, se marchó a Europa en donde se establecería hasta 1976, y allí realizaría algunas de las mejores grabaciones de su carrera para SteepleChase.

Gordon regresó esporádicamente a EE.UU., grabando en 1965, 69, 70 y 72, su regreso en 1976 constituyó un acontecimiento mediático que repercutió en un inusitado interés por su biografía, que empezó a tener tintes legendarios. Gordon firmó con Columbia y se convirtió en una figura popular hasta que su salud le obligó a casi retirarse a comienzos de los ochenta. Regresó de nuevo para participar en la película 'Round Midnight (1986, Bertrand Tavernier). Fue nominado a un Oscar por su interpretación.

Como curiosidad hay que decir que Dexter Gordon, amigo de Torben Ulrich (quien dirigía un pequeño club de jazz en Copenhague), es el padrino de Lars Ulrich de Metallica.

JONI MITCHELL

En este trabajo la cantante canadiense tuvo la colaboración del bajista Charles Mingus, que murió antes de que finalizase la grabación del disco así que terminó las canciones con un banda que incluía a Pastorius, Wayne Shorter y Herbie Hancock. La crítica no fue muy buena con el trabajo porque era una mezcla de jazz y de rock pero a lo largo del tiempo el disco se ha ido revalorizando y ganando adeptos y el reconocimiento de la crítica.
