Patrick Brucce Metheny, verdadero nombre del guitarrista y compositor, Pat Metheny, fue considerado desde su infancia un niño prodigio. Su hermano, el trompetista, Mike Metheny, lo inició en el jazz y a los 12 años agarró por primera vez una guitarra. Después de desarrollar su técnica a una velocidad asombrosa, estudiando a clásicos maestros del jazz como los guitarristas, Wes Montgomery y Charlie Christian, ganó a los quince años, una beca para jóvenes músicos con talento donada por la revista "Downbeat" y luego ingresó, también becado, a la Universidad de Miami. Poco después, con 19 años de edad, ya estaba dando clases de guitarra en la prestigiosa academia de "Berklee School of Music" de Boston, y entre sus alumnos, estaban Al Di Meola y Mike Stern.

En la Universidad de Miami, Pat Metheny, conoció al que luego sería el legendario bajista, Jaco Pastorius. En 1975, Metheny, Pastorius y el baterista Bob Moses grabaron, el primer álbum liderado por Pat Metheny, "Bright Size Life", para el sello ECM. Pero fue cuando el vibrafonista Gary Burton, a quien había conocido en Berklee, le propuso unirse a su banda cuando Pat Metheny empezó a ganar cierto reconocimiento entre sus colegas y el público especializado. Dos años después, con la llegada del tecladista Lyle Mays, empezó a germinar la idea de formar un grupo, que se completó con la incorporación del bajista, Mark Egan y el baterista, Dan Gottlieb. El "Pat Metheny Group", su formación actual, se hizo rápidamente muy popular - excepto para los puristas del jazz- por su compleja y atractiva fusión de jazz y folk. En 1984, después de grabar desde obras maestras como Rejoicing hasta registros reiterativos como First Circle, Pat Metheny dejó el sello ECM y pasó a grabar para EMI primero y para "Geffen" después, una firma más orientada al pop y al rock. En los primeros años de la década de los ochenta, la imagen musical de Pat Metheny estaba ya formada y consolidada.

Metheny tiene en su haber el hecho de haber tocado con grandes figuras del jazz como Sonny Rollins, Ornette Coleman, o Jack DeJohnette. También ha ganado numerosos premios Grammy y es considerado uno de los grandes guitarristas del jazz contemporáneo. Entre su numerosa y prolífica discografía, destacan: "Travels" (1982); "First Circle" (1984); "Song X" (con Ornette Coleman, 1985); "Still Life" (Talking) (1987); "Question and Anvers" (1989) y "We Live Here" (1995).
