The Rolling Stones es un grupo británico cuya música se basa en el rock and roll y el rhythm and blues y que junto a The Beatles sirvió como punta de lanza de la llamada invasión británica que se produjo en los primeros años de los '60s. La banda fue fundada en Londres en 1962 por su primer líder, Brian Jones, que después sería reemplazado en el mando por el binomio creativo formado entre el cantante Mick Jagger y el guitarrista Keith Richards. Con la inclusión del pianista Ian Stewart, el baterista Charlie Watts y el bajista Bill Wyman terminarían formando la primera alineación. El primero sería retirado de la alineación titular en 1963, pero siguió colaborando con la banda como manager de giras y tecladista hasta el momento de su muerte en 1985.
Los primeros álbumes de la banda se caracterizaban por incluir versiones de canciones americanas de blues y R&B, aunque a lo largo de su carrera han ido experimentado con otros géneros diversos como lo son el country, el disco o reggae. Su single "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" estableció a los Stones como una de las bandas más grandes en la escena del rock & roll. Sus composiciones se destacan, principalmente por melodías sencillas, y estructuras simples, donde no abundan demasiados acordes además de canciones crudas y cuyas letras tocan temáticas como el sexo, las drogas y en algunos casos misoginia, en desmedro de la influencia "progresiva" de la época. También son conocidos popularmente como sus Sus Satánicas Majestades, debido a su álbum de 1967 titulado Their Satanic Majesties Request, y aunque el disco fue un relativo fracaso, este mote les quedaría para siempre. Durante su American tour de 1969, Sam Cutler, el tour manager, los presentó como "The Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World" ("La banda de Rock and Roll más grande del mundo" ) , un apodo que dura hasta ahora. Su imagen de "chicos malos" es una de las que todavía imitan los aspirantes a estrellas de rock.
Ha lanzado un total de 55 álbumes, entre grabaciones originales y compilaciones, además de poner 32 singles en los top-10 de Reino Unido y los Estados Unidos, con una totalidad de más de 200 millones de discos vendidos en el mundo. El disco de 1971, Sticky Fingers, inició una cadena de 8 álbumes en el #1 de ventas en los Estados Unidos. En 1989, fueron incluidos en el Salón de la Fama del Rock and Roll, y en 2004 puestos en el 4º. lugar por la popular revista estadounidense Rolling Stone en la lista de 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. También fueron colocados en el lugar #2 de Los Mejores Artistas de todos los tiempos por el website de música Acclaimedmusic.net,considerándolos así una de las más grandes bandas de Rock & Roll, por detrás de The Beatles y por encima de otras, también británicas, como Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin y The Who. Su más reciente producción, A Bigger Bang, fue lanzada en 2005 y fue acompañada por su su gira más exitosa hasta ahora, que duró hasta finales del verano de 2007.
Historia
1962–1965: England's Newest Hit Makers
Keith Richards y Mick Jagger fueron compañeros de escuela primaria en la Wentworth Primary School del condado del Maypole de Dartford (Kent, Inglaterra).En 1960 Keith y Mick se reencontraron en una estación de metro de Londres, mientras Richards asistía al Sidcup Art College,él recuerda: "Yo todavía iba al colegio, y él a la London School of Economics... así que aborde el tren una mañana, y ahí estaba Jagger y bajo su brazo traía cuatro o cinco discos... Tenía de Chuck Berry, Little Walter y Muddy Waters"; después de ello quedó impresionado y reiniciaron su amistad. Junto con un amigo mutuo, Dick Taylor, formaron el grupo Little Boy Blue and the Blue Boys. Una noche a principios de 1962, Jagger y Richards acudieron al Ealing Club y Richards quedó impresionado con un joven guitarriasta de 20 años llamado "Elmo Lewis", que en realidad era el sobrenombre que en ese entonces usaba Brian Jones. Al final de la presentación Keith y Mick subieron al escenario para hablar con el rubio guitarrista, Brian mencionó que estaba formando una banda y les preguntó si querían unirse a ella, cosa a lo que accedieron, así nació The Ramrods and Blues Inc. Los tres se pasaron a vivir a un barrio llamado Edith Grove, lugar en el que pasaron diversas penurias por la falta de dinero y que durante un tiempo Mick les ayudó a la manutención de su departamento por medio de la beca que la universidad le daba.
La primera formación oficial era Jagger, Richards, Brian Jones, Ian Stewart en piano, Dick Taylor en el bajo y Tony Chapman en la batería (aunque algunas fuentes nombran a Mick Avory). Cuando Taylor dejó el grupo para fundar Pretty Things, Jones le cambió el nombre a la agrupación por The Rolling Stones, después de que escuchara la canción, "Rollin Stones Blues", del músico estadounidense de blues Muddy Waters. El nombre de la banda, que traducido literalmente sería algo así como «Los Cantos Rodados» o «Las Piedras Rodantes», y cuyo equivalente más próximo en castellano sería «Las balas perdidas», es una expresión que se usa coloquialmente en inglés para designar a personas descarriadas, desarraigadas o que no tienen un hogar fijo.
El 12 de julio de 1962 el grupo tocó por primera vez en el Marquee Club de Londres (la primera había sido una presentación informal en Ealing, al oeste de Londres), después de haberse cambiado el nombre a The Rollin' Stones. Más adelante se incorporarían a la banda Bill Wyman, único elemento del grupo con una verdadera educación musical y que se rumoraba que fue aceptado solo porque tenía un amplificador al que Richards y Jones pordían conectar sus guitarras, en reemplazo de Dick Taylor en diciembre de ese año y tiempo después el baterista Charlie Watts en enero de 1963, un baterísta que gozaba de cierto reconocimiento en el jazz y que incluso ya había hecho giras por Europa que irónicamente se unió a esta banda cuando él aborrecía el rock 'n' roll y el blues.
Un empresario local llamado Giorgio Gomelsky reservó a la banda para que tocara en el Crawdaddy Club, de esta forma el se conviertió en el "primer" manager de la banda, en el cúal hicieron una estancia de ocho meses en la que fueron ganando una gran base de fans, en la que se incluían The Beatles. El cuarteto los recomendó con su publicista Andrew Loog Oldham, que rápidamente firmó la banda junto con amigo Eric Easton. Gromelsky - con el que no tenían ningún acuerdo por escrito con la banda - no fue consultado. Más adelante George Harrison persuadió a Dick Rowe de la Decca Records (quien ya anteriormente había rechazado a The Beatles) para que firmara a los Stones.El renombre que ya había adquirido la banda en el Reino Unido animaría a las discográficas a firmar a otras bandas de R&B, dando por resultado un boom de ese género en el Reino Unido.
Oldham quitó a Stewart de la formación porque no lo veía como un teen Idol, aunque Stewart continuó grabando con los Stones hasta su muerte. También le dijo a Richards que se quitara la "s" de su apellido para que sonara mejor: "Keith Richard", emparejandolo con el apellido de Cliff Richard, una estrella del pop británico de la época.
Su primer EP, The Rolling Stones fue lanzado el 17 de enero de 1964 y estaba compuesto principalmente de actuaciones en directo. En abril de ese mismo año apareció su primer álbum, The Rolling Stones o también conocido como England's Newest Hitmakers en EE. UU., incluía versiones de canciones como "Route 66" (originalmente interpretado por Nat King Cole), "Mona" (de Bo Diddley) y "Carol" (de Chuck Berry). El disco fue #1 en Inglaterra durante 12 semanas y también llegó al puesto #11 en los Estados Unidos. Después de firmar con Decca, comenzaron su gira por el Reino Unido y Europa. En su primer tour por Inglaterra, acompañaron a varias estrellas americanas entre las que se incluían Ike y Tina Turner, Bo Diddley, The Ronettes, The Everly Brothers y Little Richard. Durante esta gira la banda cimentó el cambio de género de un estilo de banda rhythm and blues a algo que sonaba más a una banda pop, esto derivó en una reducción en el número de canciones blues durante sus presentaciones.
El siguiente material de la banda, The Rolling Stones No.2 (RU #1) o The Rolling Stones, Now! (EE. UU. #5) en Estados Unidos - lanzado después de 12 x 5 (EE. UU. #3) en ese país - también contenía principalmente versiones, pero con el añadido algunas composiciones del dúo conformado por Jagger y Richards a consecuencia de que fueron encerrados en una habitación por su mánager, quien impidió su salida mientras no hubiesen escrito alguna pieza que pudiesen utilizar. Para el presente álbum lanzaron como primer single "Not Fade Away" (RU #3/ EE. UU. #20), cover de Buddy Holly, para Gran Bretaña, con "Little by Little" como lado-B, y Norteamérica, con "I Wanna Be Your Man" como lado-B, que se convirtió en el primer gran éxito comercial de la banda en el país europeo. Después de terminado el disco, fueron animados por Oldham para emprender una gira por Europa y América. Durante su gira por América, en junio de 1964, se dieron tiempo para grabar su siguiente EP, Five By Five, en los estudios de Chess Records y los de RCA, en Chicago y Los Angeles respectivamente. Durante ese tiempo Oldham fue dándole una imagen a la banda de unos vándalos desaliñados, melenudos y desafiantes, que llegó a ser muy popular entre los jovenes y a ser repudiado por los padres, esto para dar "una imagen totalmente opuesta a la que los Beatles estaban dando en aquella época". Durante este American tour se presentaron en los mejores programas de variedades de la época, como el de The Ed Sullivan Show el 25 de octubre de ese año, Sullivan reaccionó al pandemonium que los Stones causaban y prometió que jamás los invitaría de nuevo, a pesar de que después los invitaría repetidamente durante sus visitas a América. En su aparición en el programa de variedades de Dean Martin, The Hollywood Palace, su imagen fue motivo de burla por parte del presentador.
1965-1968: Their Satanic Majesties
A propuesta de Oldham, Jagger y Richards se convirtieron en compositores más prolíficos. De este modo, la versión estadounidense de Out of Our Heads (RU #2 / EE. UU. #1), lanzada en 1965, contenía siete canciones originales, incluyendo "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction", que según la revista Rolling Stone es la segunda mejor canción de la cultura popular, solo detrás de "Like a Rolling Stone" de Bob Dylan y para otras revistas o canales de música, es la mejor. En ella estaba la esencia de la banda: nada de cortesía y un lenguaje directo que llevó a que el género fuera estigmatizado por el sistema. Este tema se convirtió en el primer hit #1 de la banda en América, ocupando ese puesto durante cuatro semanas, y estableció a la banda en la escena musical mundial, siendo su primer éxito a nivel global.Poco después de ello tuvieron su segundo número uno, "Get Off of My Cloud". Out of Our Heads y December's Children (USA #4), que solo salió para el mercado estadounidense, fueron los últimos álbumes en los que predominarían los covers.
El lanzamiento de Aftermath (UK #1 / USA #2) a finales de la primavera de 1966, marcó el inicio de la sociedad Jagger-Richards como pricipales compositores de los Stones. El liderazgo de la banda por parte de Jones, pasó ahora a manos de esta pareja de compositores. En la presente realización se destacaron temas como la medio-oriental "Paint It Black" (#1 en US e Inglaterra) y "Lady Jane" (un cuento histórico de pasión e intriga política ambientada en el siglo XVI, que cuenta la vida de Lady Jane, una quinceañera subida al trono de Inglaterra debido a una conspiración política) en la versión americana y de "Mother's Little Helper" en la versión inglesa. Para promocionar este disco, realizaron otra gira norteamericana a mediados de ese año, y concluyeron el año con una famosa gira inglesa que quedó registrada en el primer disco en vivo Got Live If You Want It! (USA #6). El impacto del álbum fue muy minimizado por el lanzamiento simultaneo del Revolver de los Beatles y el Blonde on Blonde de Bob Dylan.
Un nuevo álbum completamente compuesto por Jagger-Richards aparecería en febrero de 1967 con el nombre Between the Buttons (UK #3 / USA #2). La versión americana incluía el single doble "Let's Spend The Night Together"/"Ruby Tuesday" que fue editado al mismo tiempo con gran éxito, a pesar la primera fue censurada durante sus interpretaciones en TV, como ocurrió cuando se presentaron en el Ed Sullivan Show, cuyo presentador hizo a Jagger mascullar el coro de esta canción . Justo ese mes, Jagger y Richards fueron arrestados y encarcelados por posesión de drogas . El incidente marcó el principio de una serie de encuentros delictivos de ambos músicos con la policía, relacionados todos ellos con las drogas. En mayo de 1967, antes de la sesión de ensayo de Jagger y Richards, Brian Jones fue arrestado por posesión de cocaína y de metanfetaminas. Se libró de los cargos con sólo una multa y la libertad condicional, pero fue obligado a asistir a terapias para solucionar su adicción . Este álbum marcó el final de su relación con Oldham, tanto como productor y manager. En una entrevista hecha por la Rolling Stone en 2003, Jagger habló sobre la salida de Oldham, y dijo que la razón por la que él los dejó fue porque no se concentraban en la música y se 'comportaban como niños', aunque en la biografía de Oldham menciona más bien problemas monetarios.
La banda lanzó un nuevo single en agosto, "We Love You", oficialmente a motivo de agradecimiento para sus fans por su lealtad mostrada durante sus ensayos, aunque también fue visto como un ataque hacia el periódico The News of the World, la policía y algunos miembros de la judicatura británica. La grabación contó con la colaboración vocal de John Lennon y Paul McCartney.
Durante 1967, trabajaron en un nuevo álbum de estudio en el cual los Stones incursionaron en el rock psicodélico. Jagger veía una oportunidad de contrarrestar el Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band de The Beatles . El disco, llamado Their Satanic Majesties Request (UK #3 / USA #2), se presentó en una época difícil para la banda, cuando varios de sus miembros atravesaban problemas con la ley. Esto se puede ver en una de las canciones del álbum, "In Another Land", que fue escrita, compuesta e interpretada por Bill Wyman, ante la ausencia de Jagger y Richards.
El disco no resultó muy productivo y les trajo problemas con el público y la crítica, ya que no representaba el verdadero sonido de la banda. El único miembro que pudo lucirse fue Jones, que demostró un excelente manejo del género. La portada se parecía bastante al Sgt. Pepper, lo que les acarreó aún muchos más problemas ya que muchos los acusaron, incluyendo John Lennon y Paul McCartney, de copiar a The Beatles. Además, las primeras 25.000 copias tenían un holograma, lo que aumentó aun más el precio del álbum y dificultó su venta. El disco fue olvidado por los Stones durante años, incluyendo la notable "2000 Light Years From Home" (escrita por Jagger durante su breve estancia en prisión). A partir de 1989, los Stones se propusieron recobrar algunas de esas canciones tocándolas ocasionalmente en sus actuaciones.
1972–1974: It's Only Rock'n'Roll
Después de haber tenido una las mejores secuencias de discos (del Beggars Banquet al Exile) en la historia del rock & roll, críticamente muy aclamados, en especial el último, y con buena aceptación del público, los Stones entraron en una etapa de decadencia creativa llena de excesos propios de rock stars con su siguiente producción Goats Head Soup, la secuela de Exile on Main Street. Con la adicción a la heroína de Keith Richards y la posición de Mick Jagger como estrella del espectáculo, la banda sólo fue salvada por hits que los ayudan a mantenerse en la cima de las listas de popularidad. Después de una tormentosa grabación en Jamaica, es así que en 1973 salió Goats Head Soup (UK #1 / USA #1), que con canciones como "Winter", "Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)" y "Coming Down Again", llegó al primer lugar de las listas en EU y RU para que fuera desbancado por The Carpenters y Elton John.
Este álbum también incluía "Angie", una de las más conocidas canciones de amor de la banda, y que llegó al puesto #1 en Estados Unidos y muchos otros países, re-estableciendo a los Stones en la cima de las listas de hits. Popularmente se creía que hablaba sobre la nueva esposa de David Bowie, pero en realidad se refería a Anita Pallenberg, la esposa de Richards en ese entonces. La balada "Waiting on a Friend" fue grabada durante las sesiones de Goats Head Soup, pero no apareció en ningún disco hasta su inclusión en Tattoo You, ocho años después. Terminaron el año con giras por Asia, Australia y Europa.
Para 1974 el grupo se traslada a los estudios de Musicland, en Munich, para la grabación de su próximo álbum, It's Only Rock'n'Roll (UK #2 / USA #1). Para este disco, Jimmy Miller, que tená problemas de drogadicción, no fue el productor. La producción fue asumida por Jagger y Richards, que tomaron el seudónimo de "the Glimmer Twins". Fue lanzado en Octubre de 1974 con la participación del guitarrista de "The Faces", Ron Wood, en el tema que le da nombre al disco. Wood se había convertido en gran amigo de Richards y Jagger durante la grabación del álbum.
Cerca del final de 1974, Taylor se mostraba muy impaciente debido a que la banda no había tenido tours desde octubre del año pasado. La banda se encontraba en una situación de estancamiento, con los miembros que optan por pasar tiempo en el extranjero entre las sesiones de grabación y Jagger exasperado por el comportamiento errático de Richards. Los miembros de la banda terminaron por pagar multas jurídicas a causa del comportamiento de su guitarrista, los que llevó a la banda a que se les negara la entrada a ciertos países y por consiguiente se perdieron ingresos. Taylor pasó su tiempo ayudando a Jagger con la composición y grabación de las canciones, mientras que Richards estaba a menudo ausente. Jagger le prometió Taylor reconocimiento por sus contribuciones en forma de créditos oficiales de las disco. Cuando esto no sucedió, y sin tours a la vista a fines de 1974, y con una sesión de grabación ya reservada en Munich para grabar un nuevo álbum, Taylor decidió por dejar a los Rolling Stones oficialmente el 12 de Diciembre de 1974.
1974-1980: La salida de Mick Taylor y la llegada de Ron Wood
Luego de la partida de Taylor, los Stones sintieron el golpe y tomaron su tiempo en pensar el reemplazante, el candidato natural era Wood pero nadie quería que dejara a The Faces y él tampoco. Las sesiones en Munich, durante diciembre de 1974 y los primeros meses de 1975, dedicadas a la grabación de su próximo disco, fueron usadas para la audición del posible reemplazo de Taylor. Audicionaron distintos guitarristas entre los que se encontraban Humble Pie, Peter Frampton, Rory Gallagher, Shuggie Otis y el virtuoso ex-Yardbirds Jeff Beck. Harvey Mandel y Wayne Perkins, que se encontraban en las sesiones americanas, aparecieron en el siguiente disco. Sin embargo, Jagger y Richards querían que la banda seguiera siendo puramente británica. Ron, también fue invitado a tocar en las sesiones y se le suplicó que se uniera a ellos para la gira americana de 1975 ya pactada desde antes, lo cual aceptó. Más tarde aparecieron en un camión en medio de Broadway en Nueva York tocando Brown Sugar, una gran promoción que aumentó la expectativa de la gira.
Con las sesiones de grabación aún sin completar se editan dos recopilaciones para acompañar la gira, una con temas de los últimos cuatro discos llamada "Made In The Shade" (UK #14 / USA #6) y otra con inéditos de la década del '60s llamada "Metamorphosis" (UK #45 / USA #8). La gira de casi tres meses logra un éxito rotundo en todo el territorio americano con shows masivos en estadios por primera vez.
Ron Wood encajó perfecto en la imagen del grupo y reestableció las relaciones entre todos los integrantes aunque solo fuera el guitarrista invitado en la gira. Los Stones pasaron el resto de 1975 dando los toques finales al nuevo álbum al mismo tiempo que Rod Stewart abandonaba The Faces lo que convertiría a Ron para diciembre de ese año en miembro definitivo de la banda.
En Abril de 1976 con el single "Fool To Cry" sonando en todas las radios, se edita "Black and Blue" (UK #2 / USA #1), el resultado de casi un año de grabaciones con distintos guitarristas y que explora una gran gama de estilos en sus 8 canciones, como el Reggae en "Cherry Oh Baby", canción en la que se incluye Ron Wood en la guitarra, el Funk en "Hot Stuff" con Harvey Mandel o el Jazz en "Melody". La banda se embarca en una gran gira europea que incluye grandes conciertos en Alemania, España, Holanda e Inglaterra en donde tocan para 150,000 fans en Knebworth el 21 de Agosto de ese año. En medio de la gira Keith pierde un hijo recién nacido por problemas respiratorios lo que lo lleva a subir enormemente sus dosis de heroína ya de por si elevadas.
Aunque los Rolling Stones seguían siendo muy populares a mediados de los 1970's, los críticos habían ido incrementado su rechazo hacia sus nuevas producciones discográficas. En 1977, Jagger tenía planeado la grabación de un álbum en vivo en Toronto, en el club El Mocambo, pero la adicción a la heroína de Richards retrasó su llegada a Canadá, donde los demás miembros del grupo ya se habían reunido y lo estaban esperando, al momento de no ver su aparación le mandan un telegrama para ver donde se encontraba. En febrero, Richards y su familia volaban en un vuelo directo de la aerolínea BOAC y fueron detenidos por las aduanas en Canadá después de se le encuentra droga entre sus pertenencias,lo que llevó a movilizarse a la policía canadiense, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, que el domingo 27 de febrero llegaría con una orden de arresto para Pallenberg por que se había descubierto "22 gramos de heroína en la habitación de Richadrs". El guitarrista fue acusado de importación de estupefacientes en Canadá, que tiene un mínimo de siete años de carcel. Más tarde, el fiscal de la Corona reconoció que Richards había adquirido la droga después de su llegada a tierras canadienses. Luego del pago de la fianza los Stones dan dos shows en el club el Mocambo el 3 y 5 de marzo de 1977, solo para elevar más la controversia cuando Margaret Trudeau fue vista en la fiesta y con la banda después del show. Estos dos shows fueron ocultados del público y el Mocambo había sido reservado para toda la semana por April Wine para la sesión de grabación. Una estación de radio local rifó dos entradas gratis para ver a April Wine y los ganadores tuvieron derecho de escoger que días ir a ver a la banda. Los ganadores que pidieron las entradas para la noche de viernes y sábado se sorprendieron al ver que los Stones estaban tocando.
En Septiembre se edita el disco doble en vivo, "Love You Live" (UK #3 / USA #5) con temas en vivo de la gira americana de 1975, de la gira europea de 1976 y 4 temas grabados de los dos shows del Mocambo, este era su primer material en vivo desde Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out! de 1970.
El escándalo por poseción de drogas de Richards se prolongó por más de un año hasta que el artista se le suspendió la sentencia y se le ordenó que diera dos conciertos gratuitos para la CNIB en Oshawa, Ontario.Esto desencadenó a la creación de uno de sus primeros proyectos musicales fuera de la banda (que sería más comunes en Jagger en la decada de los 1980's), él y Wood formaron una nueva banda, The New Barbarians, para tocar en los shows. Esto motivó al final a que hiciera un esfuerzo para poner fin a su adicción, que a la larga resultó un gran éxito. También coincide con el final de su relación con Pallenberg, debido a que su relación empezaba a ser tensa desde la muerte de su tercer hijo (una infanta de nombre Tara) y por su incapacidad de controlar su adicción a la heroína mientras Keith luchaba por reabilitarse. Aunque Keith se encontraba envuelto en problemas problemas personales y legales , Jagger continuaba con su opulento estilo de vida. El fue visto regularmente en el club disco Studio 54, casi siempre en compañía de la modelo Jerry Hall. Su matrimonio con Blanca terminó en 1977.
A finales de los '70s, el punk rock se había convertido en influyente, y los Stones fueron criticados por su decadencia, ser más que ancianos millonarios, y que su música estaba estancada o era simplemente irrelevante. Esto cambió en 1978, cuando la banda lanza en mayo el single "Miss You" (#1 en Estados Unidos) y en junio "Some Girls" (UK #2 / USA #1), que devuelve a la banda a los primeros planos de la música, solo que esta vez con una canción con una orientación hacia la música disco. El disco, que incluía además de "Miss You", la balada country "Far Away Eyes", "Beast of Burden", y "Shattered", sería un suceso comercial que re-establecería a la banda en las listas y les ganó gran popularidad entre los jovenes. Representó una clara respuesta a los géneros predominantes del momento como el disco y el punk, por lo que sus canciones se caracterizaban por ser rápidas, básicas y por un buen manejo de guitarras. Realizan otra gran gira, el US Tour 1978, incluyendo una famosa presentación en el programa de televisón "Saturday Night Live" en donde Jagger lame los labios de Wood delante de millones de espectadores.
Entrando en la decada de los 80s, renovados por el enorme éxito comercial de su trabajo anterior Some Girls, la banda se puso a trabajar en la grabación de su próximo disco "Emotional Rescue" (UK #1 / USA #1) que fue lanzado a mediados de 1980. La grabación estuvo plagado de inconvenientes y las fricciones entre Mick y Keith empezarían a hacerse notorias. Richards, más sobrio que durante los 10 años anteriores, quería volver a tomar su lugar dentro de la banda y a tener más control dentro del estudio luego de su rehabilitación, lo que produjo una pelea en la que el guitarrista sentía que estaba luchando por "su mitad de the Glimmer Twins."
A pesar de que el disco tuvo un gran éxito comercial en ambos lados del atlantico, fue criticado con dureza y calificado de mediocre e inconsistente, algunos sentían que era una pobre imitación de su trabajo anterior. Mick se negó a realizar giras en 1980, lo que agravó más la pelea entre los líderes de los Rolling Stones.
1981–1991: Mixed Emotions
Principios de 1981, los peleados Stones deciden volver a las giras después de 3 años y vuelven al estudio para grabar nuevo material. Para sorpresa de la banda, el productor Chris Kimsey había reunido muchos temas no utilizados en los últimos 2 o 3 discos de la banda y sin pensarlo tenían un disco nuevo en sus manos. "Tattoo You" (UK #2 / USA #1) se lanzó en Agosto de ese año y fue un éxito rotundo tanto en ventas como a nivel crítica, incluía el single "Start Me Up" (#2 en USA), escrita y grabada para Some Girls en 1977. Dos canciones ("Waiting on a Friend" y "Tops", ambas descartadas de Goats Head Soup) contaban con Mick Taylor en la guitarra, mientras que el el saxofonista de jazz Sonny Rollins participó en "Slave" (grabada durante las sesiones de Black and Blue) y en una parte de "Waiting on a Friend". El American Tour de 1981 fue su más grande, más larga y más colorida producción a la fecha, con la banda tocando desde el 25 de Septiembre hasta el 19 de Diciembre. Fue el tour más grande del año. Algunas presentaciones fueron grabadas resultando en el disco en vivo de 1982 "Still Life" (UK #4 / USA #5), y Let's Spend the Night Together de 1983, un filme de Hal Ashby grabado en el Sun Devil Stadium de Phoenix, Arizona y el Brendan Byrne Arena en los Meadowlands, Nueva Jersey.
A mediados de 1982, para comemorar su vigésimo aniversario, los Stones realizaron una gira por Europa, European Tour 1982, su primera gira por ese continente en seis años. Esta resultó ser una copia exacta de su American tour de 1981. Para este tour contó con el ex-pianista de Allman Brothers Band, Chuck Leavell, quien continuaba tocando y grabando con los Stones. Al final del año, firman un contrato de 28 millones de dólares para la realización de 4 discos con una nueva disquera, CBS Records.
El disco "Undercover" (UK #3 / USA #4), editado en 1983, fue considerado como un intento de Jagger por conseguir un sonido compatible con las nuevas tendencias musicales de la época. A pesar del entusiasmo inicial de la crítica, la producción, con abundante contenido sexual y políticamente violento, fue fríamente recibido por los seguidores de la banda. No se programó gira de promoción del disco. Para complicar más la situación imperante en el seno de la banda, Ron Wood atravesaba otra crisis de salud debido a su adicción a las drogas. En esta situación, a fines de 1983 Jagger firma un contrato solista en paralelo con la compañía discográfica CBS Records, lo que provoca que el conflicto con Richards se agrave, ya que éste interpretó el gesto como una falta de compromiso con la banda.
En 1985, el co-fundador, pianista, manager de viajes y amigo de muchos años, Ian Stewart murió de un ataque al corazón. De acuerdo con Richards, la muerte de Stewart dejaba a la banda sin una fuerza moderadora que podría ayudarlos durante su época de conflictos con Jagger. Realizaron un concierto de homenaje a Stu, el único espectáculo que brindaron en esa época. Jagger dedicaba gran parte de su tiempo a su actividad como solista, por lo que la mayor parte del material de "Dirty Work" (UK #4 / USA #4), editado en 1986, fue producto del trabajo en solitario de Keith Richards con la colaboración de Woods, lo que se refleja en los créditos. La producción quedó a cargo de Steve Lillywhite, encargado de los primeros tres trabajos de U2 y dos disco de Big Country, que tenía de sello sus fuertes y amplificados sonidos de batería. Nuevamente las ventas fueron moderadas, todo agravado por la decisión de Mick Jagger de no realizar una gira para presentar la nueva producción. El sonido de la banda era agresivo, muy metálico y en general la crítica lo calificó de "poco interesante", lo denominaron El álbum que no debió ser. Ese mismo año, el conjunto británico fue galardonado con un Grammy honorífico por sus logros. En ese momento Jagger y Richards comenzaron a criticarse abiertamente ante la prensa, que asumió tácitamente que el grupo se había separado definitivamente.
Los discos en solitario de Jagger, "She's the Boss" de 1985 y "Primitive Cool" de 1987 no colmaron las expectativas ni económicas ni artísticas; sin embargo, la primera producción en solitario de Richards, "Talk is Cheap" tuvo buena aceptación por parte de la crítica y del público.
A principios de 1989, los Rolling, incluyendo a Mick Taylor, Ronnie Wood y Ian Stewart (a título póstumo), fueron incorporados en el Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.[3] Jagger y Richards parecieron haber aclarado sus diferencias y grabaron un nuevo álbum, "Steel Wheels" (UK #2 / USA #3). Este álbum incluía los singles "Mixed Emotions", "Rock and a Hard Place" y "Almost Hear You Sigh". Además, el disco contiene "Continental Drift", grabado con Bachir Attar y the Master Musicians of Jajouka en Tangier, al norte de África, en 1989 a modo de homenaje al difunto Brian Jones. La subsecuente gira U.S. Steel Wheels Tour fue su primera en siete años (desde su gira europea de 1982), y su más grande producción hasta la fecha. Comenzó el 31 de agosto de 1989 en Philadelphia ante más de 55,000 personas. El tramo americano de la gira abarcó 60 conciertos y vendió 3.2 milliones de entradas. Entre los teloneros figuraban Living Colour y Guns N' Roses.
Los Rolling Stones llegaron a Japón por primera vez en Febrero de 1990 y causaron furor: 550,000 entradas para los 10 conciertos en el país se agotaron en solo unas horas.
Para el tiempo en que la gira llegó a Europa a mediados de 1990, esta cambió de nombre por la de the Urban Jungle Tour, cuya primera fecha fue el 18 de mayo de ese año en Rotterdam, Holanda.Esto produjó la salida de un nuevo disco en vivo de la banda en 1991, "Flashpoint" (UK #6 / USA #16) que incluye dos canciones grabadas en 1991, el single "Highwire" y "Sex Drive". Luego de la promoción de Flashpoint, Bill Wyman finalmente abandona la banda a fin de año al negarse a firmar el nuevo contrato discográfico con Virgin Records tras años de deliberar su decisión. También publicó un trabajo autobiográfico, Stone Alone, basada en sus memorias que había estado escribiendo desde sus primeros días en Londres. Pocos años más tarde, formó Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings y comenzó a grabar y hacer tours nuevamente.
1992 – 1999: You Got Me Rocking
Después de las giras Steel Wheels/Urban Jungle, la banda se tomó un descanso. Charlie Watts realizó dos álbumes de jazz; Ronnie Wood editó su primer disco en solitario llamado "Slide On This"; En 1992 Keith Richards edita su segundo (y hasta ahora último) disco solista "Main Offender" y realiza una gira de tres meses por Estados Unidos, Europa y Sudamérica. Mick Jagger edita su tercer disco en solitario en Febrero de 1993, "Wandering Spirit", el cual recibe excelentes críticas y ventas superiores a las dos millones de copias. El 6 de enero de 1993, el bajista Bill Wyman anunció oficialmente su salida de la banda en el programa de televisión inglés London Tonight: "Pienso que las dos pasadas giras son lo mejor que hemos hecho, asi que me siento muy contento de retirarme" Estos discos, junto con la marcha de Wyman, crean una nueva incógnita acerca de la continuidad del grupo. El nuevo sello discográfico y distribuidora de los stones, Virgin Records, remasterizó y reempaquetó el nuevo catálogo de la banda desde Sticky Fingers a Steel Wheels sin los tres álbumes en vivo, y emitió otra compilación de éxitos en 1993 titulado "Jump Back" (UK #16 / USA #30). En 1993 la banda había fijado una fecha para su próximo álbum de estudio. Darryl Jones, ex bajista de Miles Davis y Sting, fue escogido por Charlie Watts como el reemplazo de Wyman.
En 1994 editan "Voodoo Lounge" (UK #1 / USA #2), el cuál tuvo muy buenas críticas y ventas, convirtiéndose en doble platino en los Estados Unidos. El álbum se caracterizaba por su sonido "tradicionalista" acreditado a su nuevo productor Don Was. El disco ganó el Grammy a Mejor Disco de Rock del año en 1995. A este disco le siguió la millonaria gira Voodoo Lounge Tour en la que acudieron a nuevos países como México, Chile, Brasil y Argentina. Casi 7 millones de personas asistieron a los más de 140 conciertos que el grupo brindó en los 5 continentes.
En Noviembre de 1995 editan un disco semiacústico llamado "Stripped" (UK #9 / USA #9), en el que realizan un cover de Bob Dylan, "Like a Rolling Stone", y se incluyen otras canciones que son interpretadas raras veces por los stones como "Shine a Light", "Sweet Virginia" y "The Spider and the Fly".
Luego de un año de descanso la banda vuelve a los estudios a fines de 1996 para la grabación de un nuevo disco. "Bridges to Babylon" (UK #6 / USA #3) que se editó en Septiembre de 1997, recibió críticas mixtas e incluía "Saint of Me" y "Anybody Seen My Baby?", cuyo video era protagonizado por la actriz Angelina Jolie estaba en constante rotación en MTV y VH1. Las ventas fueron razonablemente buenas, y la gira de acompañamiento Bridges to Babylon Tour fue otro éxito mundial con una recaudación cercana a los 300 millones de dólares. Una vez más, un álbum en vivo fue lanzado a fines de 1998,"No Security" (UK #67 / USA #34), sólo que esta vez todas, a excepción de dos canciones ("Live With Me" y "The Last Time" ), eran inéditas en álbumes en vivo. 2000 - Presente: Don't Stop
En 2001 Mick Jagger edita "Goddess in the Doorway", su cuarto disco en solitario que vende más de 1 millón de copias en todo el mundo, con críticas fueron mixtas. En Septiembre de 2002, en conmemoración de sus 40 años como banda, editan el recopilatorio "Forty Licks" (UK 2 / USA #2). El disco doble contenía 4 temas nuevos grabados a mediados de 2002 en París. El álbum vendió más de 7 millones de copias alrededor del mundo. El mismo año, la revista Q nombró a los Rolling Stones como una de las "50 Bandas que Debes Ver antes de Morir", y la gira Licks Tour de 2002-2003 dió al público esa oportunidad. El 30 de julio de 2003, la banda encabezó el Molson Canadian Rocks for Toronto concierto en Toronto, Ontario, Canadá, para ayudar a la ciudad -- Que se ha utilizado con frecuencia para ensayos - a recuperarse de la epidemia de SARS de 2003. Al concierto asistieron un estimado de 490,000 personas. El 9 de noviembre del mismo año, la banda toca por primera vez en Hong Kong como parte de la celebración del Harbour Fest, también en apoyo de la economía de los afectados por el SRAS. Ese mismo mes, la banda, que cuenta con los derechos exclusivos para su venta en la cadena de tiendas Best Buy, lanza su nuevo box set de 4 DVDs, "Four Flicks", extraído de su más reciente gira mundial. En respuesta a ello, algunas cadenas de disquerías de Canadá y EU (incluyendo HMV Canada y Circuit City) tiró CDs y artículos relacionados de los Rolling Stones y los reeplazaron con letreros que explicaban la situación.En 2004 se edita "Live Licks" (UK #38 / USA #50), un nuevo disco en vivo doble grabado en la última gira en el cual se mezclan clásicos (CD1) y canciones no tan difundidas (CD2).
El 26 de julio de 2005, en el cumpleaños de Jagger, la banda anuncia su primer disco de estudio en ocho años. "A Bigger Bang" (UK #2 / USA #3) fue lanzado el 5 de septiembre, recibiendo en general críticas favorables, incluyendo una brillante hecha por la revista Rolling Stone, que siempre ha apoyado a la banda constantemente. Esta producción incluye la canción más controversial de los stones en años, "Sweet Neo Con", una crítica al Neoconservadurismo americano por parte de Jagger. La canción fue casi eliminada del álbum debido a objeciones por parte de Richards. Cuando se le preguntó si tenía miedo de que la reacción política que las Dixie Chicks habían soportado por las críticas hechas por la participación de los Estados Unidos en la guerra en Irak, respondió Richards, "no quiero ser dejado de lado por una 'tormenta en un vaso de agua'". La posterior gira A Bigger Bang Tour comenzó en Agosto de 2005, y visitaron Norteamérica, Sudamérica y el Este de Asia.
En Febrero de 2006, el grupo tocó en el show de medio tiempo del Super Bowl XL en Detroit, Michigan. A finales de 2005, el Bigger Bang tour establió un record de $162 millones en ingresos brutos, rompiendo la marca norteamericana establecida también por los Stones en 1994. Más tarde ese mes, tocaron ante más de 1.5 millones de fans en la playa de Copacabana en Rio de Janeiro en un concierto gratuito. Después de las actuaciones en Nueva Zelanda, Keith Richards fue llevado al hospital en Mayo para una cirugía cerebral después de una dudosa "caída de una palma de coco" en Fiji, causando la postergación por seis semanas de su gira por Europa. El siguiente mes, Ron Wood entró a rehabilitación para dejar su abuso de alcohol. Los Stones regresaron a Norteamérica para sus conciertos de Septiempre, y más tarde a Europa el 5 de junio del próximo año. A finales de Octubre, el director Martin Scorsese filmó una presentación de la banda en el Beacon Theater de Nueva York. Por Noviembre del mismo año, el Bigger Bang tour fue declarado como la gira más recaudadora de todos los tiempos, superando los $437 millones de dólares. Su etapa por Norteamérica los dejó como la tercera más alta de todos los tiempos en esa región con $138.5 millones, solo por debajo de su propia gira del 2005 que recaudó $162 millones y el tour de U2 del mismo año con $138.9 millones.
El 24 de marzo de 2007, anunciaron un tour por Europa titulado "Bigger Bang 2007". El 12 de junio vio la salida de su segundo boxset de 4 DVDs, "The Biggest Bang", un documental de 7 horas en el que estan incluidas los shows en Austin, Rio de Janeiro, Saitama, Shanghai, y Buenos Aires, al igual que otros extras. Al igual que su primer DVD set, esta colección fue vendida unica y exclusivamente en las tiendas de Best Buy. El 26 de agosto tocaron su último concierto del A Bigger Bang Tour. Más tarde, el 26 de septiempre, se dió a conocer que su última gira, A Bigger Bang Tour, fue puesta en la última edición del libro de los records Guinness por ser "la gira con más ganancias de la historia" con un total de más de $437 millones de dólares recaudados. El 2 de octubre, Mick Jagger lanzó al mercado un disco recopilatorio de su trabajo como solista, The Very Best Of Mick Jagger, que incluyó 3 canciones inéditas. El 12 de noviembre del mismo año, la doble compilación "Rolled Gold+: The Very Best of the Rolling Stones" fue re-lanzada para la época navideña por la ABKCO Records, sin que el grupo tuviera nada que ver, como siempre ha sido el caso de su historia con esta disquera.
En abril de 2008 se estrena la película de Martin Scorsese grabada en Noviembre de 2006 en el Beacon Theater de Nueva York, titulada Shine a Light que contó con las apariciones de Jack White y Christina Aguilera. La banda de sonido de la película (el décimo disco en vivo de la banda) fue lanzado simultáneamente consiguiendo un sorprendente debut en el puesto 2 del ránking inglés, la mejor posición en los charts para un disco en vivo de la banda en 38 años. El disco también llegó al puesto 11 del ránking norteamericano.

Was Jagger reminded of this song by a copy of an unauthorized recording purchased while in New York? He commented on
unauthorized recordings at some length in an interview from the early 70's.
Found on the LP "Highway Bound" on Tofu records. There's something on this box set for everyone.
First ever releases of some songs and best quality version of the older ones. Jagger isn't too keen on the concept of
retrospective box sets these days, so this is probably as good as it gets.
