El hip hop es un movimiento artístico y cultural que surgió a principios de los años 1970 en las comunidades hispanoamericanas y afroamericanas de barrios pobres neoyorquinos (Bronx, Queens y Brooklyn) donde desde el principio destacaron como manifestaciones características la música (funk, rap, Blues, DJing), el baile (hustle, uprocking, lindy hop, popping, locking) y la pintura (aerosol, bombing, murals, political graffiti).
Afrika Bambaata acuñó el término hip hop en aquella época, aunque años más tarde KRS One, originario del Bronx, quiso unificar en cuatro los elementos del hip hop: el MCing (rapping), el DJing (turntablism), el breakdancing (bboying) y el graffiti. Hizo esto con la idea de simplificar la definición de hip hop; pero para muchos esto puede resultar incompleto, ya que existen otras manifestaciones que quedarían excluidas de esta clasificación, como el beatbox, los murales, el beatmakin o producción de fondos musicales ('beats'), el popping, el locking el uprocking etc.

Biografía:
B-Real (nacido como Louis Freese el 2 de junio de 1970) es un rapero
latino de ascendencia cubana y mexicana. Es conocido por ser el líder
del grupo de hip hop Cypress Hill, debutando en 1991.
De padre mexicano y madre afro-cubana, B-Real creció en el South Gate
area de Los Angeles. Antes de dejar la escuela, hizo amistad con los
que serían sus futuros compañeros en el grupo Cypress Hill; Sen Dog
y Mellow Man Ace (quién renunciaría al grupo y daría comienzo a su
carrera en solitario). Sen Dog, que estaba afiliado con los Bloods
(concretamente con la “Neighborhood Family”, introduciría a B-Real
más tarde en el “juego”.
B-Real comenzó a traficar con crack durante su afiliación con los
Bloods, y su peligroso modo de vida le trajo problemas tras ser
disparado en un pulmón en 1988. El disparo y la hospitalización de
B-Real hicieron a Sen Dog replantearse sus prioridades, abandonar
la vida en pandilla y conseguir un trabajo como guardia de seguridad
de unos grandes almacenes.
Tras introducir a DJ Muggs en el grupo, que se trasladó desde New York
a California, B-Real y Sen Dog se interesaron en el concepto de Muggs
de crear un álbum basado en experiencias desde Cypress Ave en South Gate,
lugar donde crecieron. B-Real usaría sus experiencias en la vida como
material para el primer álbum, que se titulaba igual que el grupo, y para
los siguientes.
