Nacido un 13 de septiembre de 1944 en Windy City, Cetera se encontraba en una banda llamada The Exceptions a fines de 1967 cuando fue reclutado por otro grupo, en ese entonces llamado Chicago Transit Authority, para tocar bajo.

A principios de los ‘70, Chicago ya era uno de los grupos más populares de Estados Unidos con su estilo de jazz-rock, con hits como “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?” y “Saturday in the Park”, muchos de ellos con Cetera en voces. En el 1981 grabo su primer album como solista permaneciendo junto a la banda. Aunque la suerte de la banda disminuyó durante el resto de esa década, en 1982 volvieron al tope de los rankings con “Hard to Say I’m Sorry”; le siguieron varios hits más, como “”Hard Habit to Break” y “You’re the Inspiration”.

Después de abandonar la banda, pronto volvió al tope de los rankings con “The Glory of Love“, el primer simple de su álbum Solitude/Solitaire y el tema de la película The Karate Kid Part II; ese mismo año tuvo otro gran éxito con “The Next Time I Fall”, a dúo con Amy Grant.
