The Kinks

fue un grupo musical británico formado en Londres en los años 60 por los hermanos Ray y Dave Davies. Desde sus primeros tiempos estaban muy influidos por el Rock and roll y el Rhythm & blues americanos. En 1964 consiguieron su primer nº 1 en las listas británicas con "You Really Got Me", su canción más emblemática, dándose a conocer como parte de la Invasión Británica en Estados Unidos (nº 7 en Billboard) Esta canción ha permanecido como una de las más significativas de la década de los 60 y su sonido es considerado precursor del Hard rock.

La evolución como compositor de Ray Davies, llevó al grupo a una segunda época con un sonido mucho más "británico" y Pop, que les proporcionó éxitos como “Sunny Afternoon” o “Waterloo Sunset”. Sus trabajos en estos años han ejercido gran influencia en movimientos tan distintos como el Glam Rock, el Punk, o la New Wave , a pesar de que, en términos de popularidad y apoyo de su discográfica, siempre estuvieron a la sombra de The Beatles, The Rolling Stones o The Who.

En 1970 y tras un período de menor presencia en las listas, alcanzaron su último nº 1 en el Reino Unido con el single “Lola”. Sus problemas con la discográfica Pye les llevó a firmar por RCA, iniciando una fase caracterizada por el rock con tintes teatrales. Debido a la falta de apoyo promocional, el grupo pasó a un segundo plano, sobre todo en su país, lo que hace que se trasladen a los Estados Unidos. Allí firmaron con Arista, discográfica con la que disfrutaron de un nuevo periodo de éxito en el cambio de década y los primeros años 80, éxito que no se volvió a repetir hasta su separación en 1997.
