The Sex Pistols, grupo de punk rock británico formado en 1975 por el cantante John Lydon (Johnny Roten), el bajista Glen Matlock, el guitarrista Steve Jones y el baterista Paul Cook. A principios de 1977 Matlock fue sustituido por Sid Vicious, en virtud de su imagen rebelde y pese a no saber tocar el bajo.

El grupo fue una idea de Malcolm McLaren, propietario, por aquel entonces, de una tienda de material erótico. La historia cuenta que McLaren escogió a Lydon como vocalista tras verle aparecer en su tienda enfundado en una camiseta con la leyenda ‘I hate Pink Floyd’ [en castellano, ‘Odio a Pink Floyd’]

Desde el punto de vista de la rebeldía ante lo establecido y el nihilismo vital, la carrera de Sex Pistols fue ejemplar; sólo publicaron un álbum, y desaparecieron antes de someterse a aquello que tanto odiaban: el orden, las normas y la disciplina.

Sus constantes provocaciones alcanzaron el punto más álgido con la publicación en 1977 del disco sencillo God save the queen, el mismo día en que se celebraba el aniversario de la reina Isabel II en el trono de Inglaterra.

Poco después publicaron su único álbum, Never mind the bollocks, piedra angular del estilo denominado punk, nacido como reacción al rock progresivo de bandas como Led Zeppelin y los citados Pink Floyd.

El grupo se embarcó inmediatamente en una gira por Estados Unidos que duró sólo catorce días. Tras el concierto en San Francisco del 14 de enero de 1978, Lydon abandonó el grupo. Sid Vicious se suicidó poco después, tras verse implicado en el asesinato de su novia Nancy Spungen.

En 1996, los tres supervivientes y Matlock se reunieron de nuevo para dar una serie de conciertos que bautizaron como The Filthy Lucre Tour –La gira del asqueroso lucro-, que resultó un gran éxito.
