Stereolab es un conjunto inglés de música rock cuyo estilo combina la música lounge de los años 50 y 60 con el ritmo "motorik" del kraut rock. Fue uno de los primeros grupos a los que se aplicó la etiqueta post rock. Su sonido se caracteriza por el uso de antiguos instrumentos de teclado analógicos tales como sintetizadores Moog y órganos eléctricos Farfisa y Vox.
El grupo, que toma su nombre de un sello discográfico de los años 60, está liderado por el inglés Tim Gane (guitarra y teclados) y la francesa Laetitia Sadier (voces, teclado, trombón y guitarra), deudores del sonido kraut rock (Kraftwerk y NEU!) , del space-rock británico y de la inventiva de bandas pioneras en experimentación de sonido como lo fue The Velvet Underground.
Tras la disolución de McCarthy, su anterior grupo, Gane montó el dúo con una de sus fans, Laetitia, a quien conoció en los conciertos.
Aunque Stereolab ha tenido diversos cambios en su formación desde sus comienzos, el germen activo del grupo siempre ha permanecido en ellos dos. Pero conviene recordar que nunca han sido un dúo, sino un proyecto abierto por el que han pasado músicos como el bajista neozelandés Martin Kean (The Chills), Mary Hansen (fallecida en un accidente de carretera) o David Pajo guitarrista de diversos grupos, Tortoise entre otros.
