Power Premier League Forced to Settle for Frustrating Draw With Taringa Rovers
Monday 3rd March 2008
The Peninsula Power 2008 Premier League campaign is underway with a 2-2 draw against Taringa Rovers last Sunday at Dalton Park.
Power dominated the early exchanges with Steven Cleary and Peter Fairgrieve having best scoring opportunities inside the first ten minutes of the match. Both players were unable to convert crosses from out wide and the visitors defence cleared the danger.
However in the 16th minute Taringa striker Russell Kamo capitalized on a deflection off a defensive clearance that came off Brad Lacey and he slotted the ball into Powers net from 15 metres out.
Power was creating plenty of scoring chances with several balls whipped across the front of Taringa goal. The best chance to level the score fell to Cleary just before the break when his low strike was cleared off the goal line by a Rovers defender.
The second period started on a positive note for the home side when Joel Dempster whipped in a cross for Power striker Shaun Feuerriegel to head the ball into the goal and level the score. In the 60th minute Rovers’ Kildey then produced a quality save to deny a goal bound strike by Power’s Zac Tung. The pressure on Taringa’s defence eventually was rewarded when Andrew Butler crossed from out wide and Joel Dempster pounced to give Power a 2-1 lead.
Power were looking to dominate as Taringa looked rattled at having gone behind for the first time in the match. An error in midfield gave the visitors a chance to threaten the Power goal. Brad Lacey was then given space inside the box to shoot and level at 2-2.
With only minutes remaining Steven Cleary could have given Power the winning goal when he beat two defenders and found space for a shot on goal. However it was wide of the goal and the teams each received a point to start the season.
Power Coach Terry Kirkham was frustrated that his side never produced the killer blow. "We worked ourselves into excellent scoring positions, only to be let down with the finish” he said.
The Power Opposite Lock Man of the Match was Andrew Butler.
Power Reserves took all three points off Taringa with a 3-1 victory.
Nathan Draper, Victor Bradbury and Jason Davis were the Power goalscorers.
Peninsula Power Under 18 Youth striker Brandon Jenkins netted a hat trick in a 3-2 win over Grange Thistle.
Power Metro sides lost both games away. Metro 5 were defeated by Bayside 6-0 and Metro 3 side lost 4-2 to Western Spirit.
Peninsula Power’s A.J. Kelly Park will host Pine Rivers in the Premier League local derby this Saturday. The match will also coincide with the official opening of the new playing field and the new electronic scoreboard.
