The week before a wedding can be fraught, but for publisher Howard Steele, marrying the delectable Mel, it becomes a nightmare of gargantuan proportions. Everything that can possibly go wrong does go wrong, much of the chaos resulting from Howard's earnest attempts to do the right thing. Cassie, an office colleague with whom he had a one-night-stand at the Christmas party two years previously, turns out to be homicidally obsessed with him and sets out to wreck the imminent nuptials.

Howard's sycophantic attempts to schmooze his in-laws-to-be (a High Court judge and his society wife) fall on stony ground and their relationship becomes virtually terminal when - through a sequence of unfortunate events - Howard hospitalises Mel's granny, accidentally gropes her mother, loses the wedding ring (a family heirloom) and, worst of all, kills the family dog. Other disasters to plague Howard include his best man falling into a coma on the stag night (to be replaced by Howard's mate Dom), Cassie running over the vicar, his wide-boy father taking his new girlfriend - a mouthy pole-dancer - to the wedding, and getting arrested.

The Worst Week Of My Life was a real rarity: a decent, British 21st-century sitcom that wasn't performer/star written (as were Spaced, The League Of Gentlemen, Phoenix Nights, I'm Alan Partridge and their like). A classy comedy of errors from Bussell and Sbresni, two of the creative team behind Barbara, the show expertly exploited its central premise to the fullest degree and was enriched by a first-rate cast, particularly Geoffrey Whitehead as Dick, a towering monolith of suppressed rage and percolating loathing.

Initial criticism pointed out that the show (or the opening episode, at least) was similar to the US hit comedy film Meet The Parents (released in 2000), but actually this was merely happenstance because The Worst Week Of My Life had been conceived before the film emerged. Anyway, as the series progressed it moved into a broader area and such comparisons were forgotten. A bad seven days for Howard Steele certainly, but a good seven weeks for the viewers.

1. Monday
Jelous colleagues, and a missing wedding ring, causes problems for Howard, with only five days to go until his wedding to Mel.

2. Tuesday
There's an uncomfortable atmosphere during breakfast as Howard faces up to the night before and his accidental bedroom liaison with Angela, Mel's mom. Redemption is at hand for Howard however as the long awaited ring finally arrives. Relations seem to be going well until he receives a petrifying call from Cassie, an ex-flame, who decides to profess her wanton desire for Howard, all while Howard is standing less than two feet away from Mel and her parents. Luckily for Howard, the day is broken up by a visit to Ron (John Benfield), his widowed father, but upon arrival Howard and Mel are welcomed by cries for help. A panicked Howard breaks into his father's home only to receive an embarrassing introduction to Ron's latest girlfriend. Back at Mel's parents, Howard discovers the remnants of a familiar ring-bearing box adorning the gnarled teeth of Binky, the family dog. As Howard contemplates how to extricate himself from this latest situation, an encounter with Mel's Father, Dick (Geoffrey Whitehead), over a wall building project gives rise to an unfortunate mishap involving, Howard, a cement mixer, and poor old Binky.

3. Wednesday
Mel and Howard return home to find Cassie in a compromising position in their bedroom. In desperation Howard agrees to meet with Cassie to try to put an end to her mad interfering but his plan goes horribly wrong, leaving a distraught Mel searching for her fiancé. Later Howard is determined to put things rights with his future in laws, and brings thoughtful gifts to soften the blow of Binky's demise. Unfortunately the presents get muddled up with a joke gift for the best man and once again Howard is regarded with horror by Dick and Angela. Things turn from bad to worse as Uncle Fraser (Ronald Pickup) arrives for the wedding and the family prepare for Binky's funeral. What more can possibly go wrong for Howard?

4. Thursday
Cassie's father turns up at the Cook household and berates Howard for "abandoning" his daughter until Uncle Fraser takes charge of the situation and escorts him off the premises. Strained relations between Mel and Howard take a turn for the worse when the wedding program arrives with an embarrassing print error...if only Howard had proof read them correctly! Mel and Howard part for their respective bachelor and bachelorette parties. Mel decides to get drunk and begins reminiscing about past relationships, which leads her to get in touch with an old flame. Meanwhile Howard's evening is one long disaster beginning in the pub and ending in the river Thames.

5. Friday
Howard wakes up in a prison cell to find out some terrible news about his best man Ben. It's a mad rush to the wedding rehearsal but sadly things don't go quite to plan and an ambulance is called to the church. Still they can look forward to a nice meal with the whole Cook family and Howard's father Ron and his lap dancer girlfriend Trish (Lizzie Roper). Howard and Mel are determined not to let their family differences get in the way of their happiness and finally sneak away to enjoy some time to themselves, unfortunately their flirting ends in disaster for Granny Cook (Hazel Douglas).

6. Saturday
After the worst week of their lives the wedding day finally arrives, the big question is: are Mel and Howard actually going to make it down the aisle? Granny is in intensive care, Uncle Fraser has an urgent confession and there's a problem with Howard's suit. But the bride and groom remain undeterred. That is, until the father of the bride locks himself in the study and the bride goes missing. Can Howard and Mel make it to the church on time and will Angela's hors d'oeuvres survive until the reception?

Howard's and Mel's lives descend into further chaos. Are they destined to remain unmarried forever? Sunday morning in The Cook household: The father of the bride is nursing a bottle of scotch, the mother of the bride isn't talking to her husband, and their daughter Mel is missing. The police refuse to do anything until she has been missing for 24 hours so it's all up to Howard to try and find his bride. Will they be happily ever after?

1. Monday

Howard and mother-to-be Mel begin the week by moving into the cottage bequeathed to them in Granny's will, but their upheaval coincides with the funeral. When one of the pallbearers is taken ill, Dick finds it difficult to entrust the job to the new member of the family.

Howard declines to go to Buckingham Palace and instead prepares a barbecue to celebrate Dick's CBE, but the arrival of Fraser and his friend Gerard complicates matters. Things go from bad to worse when the hapless husband decides to confront Cordelia about the sexual harassment charge - and also discovers Eve's told his boss about his arrest the night before.

Davina is worried that her brother-in-law Roger is wanting to start an affair with her. It's only after the unexpected arrival of Roger's son Michael and the liberal use of a class C narcotic, that the true nature of Roger's desires are revealed.

Howard is busy doing his best to put a few things right, but it is not easy. As progress is made on one thing, yet another seems to be waiting to catch Howard out. After a tense meeting at work it seems that Mel's big day has arrived early! Is it time to meet Baby Steel?

As Mel goes into labour, Howard and Dick slave to get things ready, while the midwife makes a timely entrance. Everybody gets more tense as the night wears on - but there could still be hope at the end of the disastrous week for the parents-to-be.

Season 3

1. Episode One

Howard drunk and dressed solely in a black bin bag It's Howard's first festive season with the in-laws, a terrifying ordeal for most people, but a particularly scary one for poor Howard. When he turns up at his office Christmas party it's apparent from the word go that it's going to be a disastrous evening. He's drunkenly propositioned, electrocuted while doing a spot of karaoke and then vomited on by his drunken boss!

Meanwhile a blissfully unaware Mel packs up baby Emily and turns up at her parents' house earlier than expected. Angela and Dick are excitedly preparing for their grand-daughter's first Christmas, when the doorbell rings to reveal Howard drunk and dressed solely in a nappy made out of a black bin bag! After a flurry of explanations, Howard dashes for a pee in the downstairs loo – but it's not the downstairs loo it's the pantry and, as the lights come back on, the whole family witness him doing something unspeakable… Then a false alarm leads to Howard telling Mel's family that Dick has died, and somehow Howard is already spending Mel's inheritance money on a car they most definitely can't afford...

2. Episode Two
Howard's festive spirit is begins to wear thin Howard's festive spirit is beginning to wear thin. He has accidentally annihilated the dolls' house Dick has been painstakingly restoring for baby Emily and must somehow prevent Dick from finding out. Things start to unravel when a concerned family friend turns up to mourn a very much alive Dick... and Howard manages to give her prize stud corgi some unintentional surgery while trying out the garden strimmers set aside for Dick's Christmas present. Howard and Mel escape the increasingly tense atmosphere with a spot of last minute Christmas shopping, but this is short-lived as Howard is involved in an almighty fight with a belligerent Santa!

3. Episode Three
Howard's Christmas goes from bad to worse With the whole family attending Midnight Mass, Howard protects himself from Eve's insane ex boyfriend Mitch, by bludgeoning him with the Virgin Mary from the Nativity display. Despite this, things for once are just starting to look up for him when the next morning Mel admits she is strangely turned on by his macho behaviour – surely not a good idea when your in-laws are downstairs!

When Fraser convinces himself that Howard has stolen his bagpipes and Eve becomes dangerously suicidal, Howard's chances of a relaxing Christmas Day with his family start to recede alarmingly. At least nothing terrible will happen to the Christmas presents... or will it?
