La enunciación del feminismo como movimiento comenzó en Inglaterra, en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, y fue realizada por mujeres que pretendían acceder a los derechos de propiedad, que todavía la ley británica les negaba. Incluso cuando el parlamento británico aprobó la Primera Ley Patrimonial de Mujeres Casadas en 1882, siguió negándoles a éstas patrimonio independiente de aquel del marido, un derecho que fuera reconocido a las musulmanas en el siglo VII, en tiempos del profeta Mahoma.
