Mono is a post-rock group from Tokyo, Japan that formed in late 1999 or early 2000.
Work on Mono was started in January 2000 by guitarist Takaakira Goto. Working by himself, Goto completed most of Mono's demo tracks, partly influenced by guitarist Loren Connors. By late 1999 Goto began the search for band members, the first of which to join him was fellow guitarist and long time friend Yoda. Soon afterwards the guitarist duo linked up with bassist Tamaki and drummer Yasunori Takada and Mono was formed. On small-time label Forty-4, the newly coalesced group released a 4 track EP entitled Hey, You. Following Hey, You Mono put together its first full length album in 2001, Under the Pipal Tree on Tzadik Records. During the time in the studio recording this album, the attacks of September 11th took place. This was to have a deep effect on Mono's later work. Under the Pipal Tree, along with the EP, introduced Mono's style which is focused on layered guitar melodies. All of Mono's songs are entirely instrumental, and Strings and pianos are also prominently featured in several songs. This album was met with somewhat mixed reviews and was referred to by Goto in a 2006 interview with Phil McMullen as a "very, very young album"[1].

Neige has stated in interviews that he had not listened to these types of music prior to the recording of Souvenirs d'un autre monde. Hershey, PA alternative pop band the Ocean Blue was formed in 1987 by singer/guitarist David Schelzel, keyboardist Steve Lau and bassist Bobby Mittan, longtime schoolmates who shared an affection for college radio favorites including U2, Echo & the Bunnymen, the Smiths and R.E.M. With the addition of drummer Rob Minnig, the group signed to Sire the following year, issuing their self-titled 1989 debut within months of graduating high school; the record immediately found favor on alternative radio, notching the hits "Between Something and Nothing" and "Drifting, Falling." The Ocean Blue's sophomore effort Cerulean appeared in 1991, continuing the atmospheric approach of its predecessor; Beneath the Rhythm and Sound surfaced two years later, with the video for "Sublime" becoming an MTV favorite. 1994's EP Peace and Light closed out the Ocean Blue's Sire contract, and was also Lau's final recording with the group -- he left to form his own label (Kinetic). Guitarist/keyboardist Oed Ronne was recruited for their 1996 Mercury debut See the Ocean Blue; 1999's Davy Jones' Locker appeared on the band's own Ocean Blue label prior to being reissued and distributed by March Records/What Are Records? in early 2001. This was followed by Waterworks in 2004.

Rogue Wave was formed in 2002 when Zach Rogue took off from his San Francisco home, headed for New York, and came home with nearly a full album's worth of songs recorded. Rogue then quit his post in his previous group, the Desoto Reds, and finished the album, which was released on Rogue's own Responsive label under the title of Out of the Shadow. As he was completing the record, Rogue decided to form a band to promote it and soon hooked up with drummer/keyboardist Pat Spurgeon, bassist Sonya Westcott, and guitarist Gram LeBron. This outfit played shows in 2003 with the likes of Spoon, Mates of State, and other indie rock big shots. Sub Pop was impressed by the band and the record, and reissued Out of the Shadow in 2004...
